Otrivine adult nasal spray contains the active ingredient xylometazoline, which is a type of medicine called a decongestant.
When this medication is sprayed into the nose, xylometazoline works by acting on alpha receptors found on the walls of blood vessels in the linings of the nasal passages and sinuses.
It causes these blood vessels to constrict and narrow, which decreases blood flow to the linings of the nose and paranasal breasts.
This reduces swelling and the feeling of congestion. It also reduces mucus production, helping to relieve a blocked nose.
Safety Warnings
Liver warning: This product contains acetaminophen. The maximum daily dose of this product is 10 tablets (3,250 mg acetaminophen) in 24 hours. Severe liver damage may occur if you take more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours, with other drugs containing acetaminophen, 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day while using this product.
